If you are a migraine sufferer, you know that the course of your day can change drastically depending on your symptoms. You can wake up feeling ready to take charge but end up wanting to crawl into bed and shut off all of the lights in a manner of a few hours. Have you identified any of your migraine triggers? Try to take note of the following:
Common migraine triggers (1)
- Lack of sleep
- Increased stress
- Poor posture
- Alcohol intake (especially red wine)
- Low blood sugar (skipping meals)
Have you ever thought about how your neck can affect your migraines?
Long-term stress, chronic poor posture, and previous trauma are all potential causes of spinal misalignment. Your spinal cord is housed inside of the vertebrae (bones) in your spine. When the top bone in your spine (atlas) misaligns, this creates tension in your spinal cord. This tension can cause the signals going up and down your spinal cord (to and from your brain) to be distorted, possibly resulting in migraine symptoms.

Dr. DiGregorio is trained in Atlas Orthogonal, a specific chiropractic procedure that is focused on the realignment of the atlas. It is incredibly gentle and precise. Through correcting the atlas, the spinal cord has reduced tension. This can lead to the reduction of migraine symptoms.
Bernard et al. described a case of a 16-year-old girl who suffered from chronic migraines since she was in kindergarten. After analysis, she was found to have an atlas misalignment. After 5 corrections (over 16 visits), she no longer relied on her medications. Her headache frequency decreased from 1-2 severe migraines per week to 2-4 mild headaches per month. (2)
