Common Migraine Triggers and a Natural Option

If you are a migraine sufferer, you know that the course of your day can change drastically depending on your symptoms. You can wake up feeling ready to take charge but end up wanting to crawl into bed and shut off all of the lights in a manner of a few hours. Have you identified any of your migraine triggers? Try to take note of the following:

Common migraine triggers (1)

  • Lack of sleep
  • Increased stress
  • Poor posture
  • Alcohol intake (especially red wine)
  • Low blood sugar (skipping meals)

Have you ever thought about how your neck can affect your migraines?

Long-term stress, chronic poor posture, and previous trauma are all potential causes of spinal misalignment. Your spinal cord is housed inside of the vertebrae (bones) in your spine. When the top bone in your spine (atlas) misaligns, this creates tension in your spinal cord. This tension can cause the signals going up and down your spinal cord (to and from your brain) to be distorted, possibly resulting in migraine symptoms.

Dr. DiGregorio is trained in Atlas Orthogonal, a specific chiropractic procedure that is focused on the realignment of the atlas. It is incredibly gentle and precise. Through correcting the atlas, the spinal cord has reduced tension. This can lead to the reduction of migraine symptoms.

Bernard et al. described a case of a 16-year-old girl who suffered from chronic migraines since she was in kindergarten. After analysis, she was found to have an atlas misalignment. After 5 corrections (over 16 visits), she no longer relied on her medications. Her headache frequency decreased from 1-2 severe migraines per week to 2-4 mild headaches per month. (2)

At A.O. Spinal Care, we are dedicated to your well-being. If you want more information on migraines and Atlas Orthogonal care, contact us at (843) 352-7941

Glee Star Kristin Chenoweth’s Battle with Meniere’s Disease

Vertigo, Dizzy, Chronic FatigueKristen Chenoweth, Broadway actress and regular on Glee, is battling with Meniere’s disease, a condition that causes vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Obviously, this is a difficult condition for anyone to deal with, but especially can be challenging for someone in the entertainment industry.

While not releasing much publicly about the condition, Chenoweth did mention it on Twitter. Questions arise as to whether the condition is related to an accident she sufferedb while working on an episode of The Good Wife. She was struck on the head when a lighting rig suddenly fell. The result was a concussion along with a fracture of her skull and three teeth.

Meniere’s Research Leans Toward Neck Injuries as Cause

An upper cervical chiropractor, Dr. Burcon, has been looking into neck injuries as the potential cause of Meniere’s disease. In one study that he performed, upper cervical chiropractic adjustments either cured or dramatically reduced the effects of Meniere’s symptoms in 97% of patients.

Patients were asked to rate their vertigo on a scale of zero to 10. Zero would be considered no dizziness at all while 10 would mean that the condition was debilitating. At the outset of the study, the 139 patients averaged an 8.5. Within two years, that average had dropped to a 1.4, and only three patients claimed to have no benefit.

The one thing every patient had in common was an injury. Most were due to car accidents. A number had suffered whiplash, but it was never diagnosed.

Understanding Fibromyalgia Causes in Mount Pleasant, SC

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Always Tired, Natural ReliefFibromyalgia diagnoses are made by excluding other conditions that can cause similar symptoms. This means a long and possibly expensive process before treatment can begin. Since the number of Americans being affected is 3-20 million persons,1 knowing what causes fibromyalgia is a priority.

At one time, fibromyalgia was diagnosed by pressing on 18 different spots in a person’s body to see where pain registered. Now, once other causes are ruled out, a diagnosis can be given after the pain last for three months.

Fibromyalgia Mount Pleasant

Discovering the Cause of Fibromyalgia

Researchers are looking to abnormal stimulation of nerves in the brain to see if the cause of fibromyalgia can be identified. This abnormal stimulation may alter how the brain functions and cause neurotransmitter levels to increase. The result is a brain that reacts more strongly to pain signals.

Treatments for fibromyalgia are usually geared toward relieving symptoms. While beneficial in the short-term, pain management provides no long-term relief. Lifestyle changes are also often recommended. Stress management is particularly encouraged. Again, however, these changes provide limited benefits and do not address the underlying cause of fibromyalgia.

Upper cervical chiropractic care, however, has provided natural and lasting relief for many. Dr. Rick DiGregorio is an upper cervical chiropractor in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Dr. DiGregorio’s methods involve examining the alignment of a person’s C1 and C2 vertebrae. Any misalignment may compromise nervous system function.

Realignment of the C1 and C2 can allow the body to repair nervous system function. This, in turn, has relieved symptoms for many patients suffering from fibromyalgia. If you or a loved one are suffering from fibromyalgia, schedule a consult with Dr. DiGregorio to see if the underlying cause of the condition is treatable.

Natural Migraine Relief in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Headaches, Migraines, Head Pain, Headache, MigraineDid you know that, in the US alone, it is estimated that more than 45 million people suffer from headaches and that 28 million individuals experience migraines? That is quite an astounding figure. Young people are not exempt, with about 1 in 5 adolescents experiencing a significant headache during youth.

Types of Headaches

Tension Headaches: This is the most common form of a headache. It starts with muscular contraction with is abnormal (often due to stress). The result is a moderately painful headache. Over time, tension headaches come and go.

Migraines: A migraine is a moderate to severe neurological experience that results in pain that can be described as pounding or throbbing. While minor migraines may last a few hours, some can last for days. Other symptoms of a migraine include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light-Sensitivity
  • Noise-Sensitivity

The medical field is yet to come up with a cause of migraines, but the fact that migraines are a neurovascular condition is generally agreed upon. That means that migraines begin somewhere in the nervous and vascular systems.1

Cluster Headaches: This is the most severe form of a headache. Fortunately, it is a rare condition. Cluster headaches are accompanied by severe pain that is either throbbing or constant. The pain is usually localized to one side of the head, often behind the eye. Cluster headaches can occur multiple times per day for weeks or even months.

How to Seek Help?

Many physicians prescribe medication for headaches or migraines. These medications only address the symptoms and not the underlying cause. Thus, relief is temporary at best.

A natural alternative can be found under the care of Dr. Rick DiGregorio in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Dr. DiGregorio is an upper cervical chiropractor and works to provide natural migraine relief through the realignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. Misalignment of the C1 and C2 can affect both neurological and vascular function, thereby resulting in migraines. Realignment restores function to these systems and can help migraine sufferers to treat their condition at the root of the problem, thus attaining true relief.2

Soccer Heading, Migraines and Brain Injury

Migraines, Headaches, Brain Injury, Head InjuryMild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Soccer

By now, many of us are aware of the impact of traumatic brain injuries to people in the military and those who play football. Numerous studies have been done in recent years that show these injuries may cause a lasting impact on cognition and memory.

Though it may not seem like it does much damage, and you want your child to have fun, all of those times they hit a soccer ball with their head may also be causing a brain injury to develop. Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City came to that conclusion using advanced magnetic imaging (MRI) techniques.

Migraines in Mount Pleasant

According to their research, the repetitive act of hitting a soccer ball with the head causes brain changes comparable to those of patients with traumatic brain injuries. Soccer players hit soccer balls with their head about five or six times during a game, but those same players may hit a soccer ball with their head 30 or more times during practice.

Dr. Lipton, lead researcher and medical director of MRI at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, made the following statement:

“Specifically soccer heading entails numerous repetitions of mild impact to the head. My area is mild traumatic brain injury, so I look at how much does it take (to have a lasting effect).   Soccer players are repeatedly hitting their head, and we know that multiple head injuries tend to be worse than just one. The more heading people did, the more likely they were to have abnormalities of brain microstructure and worse cognitive performance.”

The good news is: Even with all of the damage hitting a soccer ball with the head can do to the brain, that damage can be reversed. However, it will mean putting your care in the hands of someone who is not associated with traditional medicine, but is an expert at getting to the underlying source of that traumatic brain injury.

An upper cervical chiropractor can examine the upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments that may have resulted from those numerous soccer ball headings. A misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae of only ¼ of a millimeter can place enough pressure on the brainstem to hinder the brain’s ability to communicate with the body. Fortunately, an upper cervical chiropractor can align those top two bones in your neck, thus restoring the brain’s ability to communicate with the body.

Pro Football Player Raising Fibromyalgia Awareness

Dominque Easley played college ball in Florida, was chosen in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft, and is presently one of the New England Patriot’s defensive linemen. His sister, Destinee, suffers from fibromyalgia, having been diagnosed at the age of 12. The severity of her case resulted in her having to leave school. Sometimes she even has to use a wheelchair. Because of this, Easley is donating the proceeds from a football camp to a new foundation he has started to raise fibromyalgia awareness.

Fibromyalgia: What Is It?

A common condition, 5 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. It is a chronic condition that results in body-wide pain. It is believed that this condition is caused by a problem in the central nervous system. That is why lab reports often come back normal. Due to a nervous system problem, pain is felt more strongly, and trigger points show up all over the body. Fatigue, headaches, and problems sleeping also afflict patients.

A Natural Treatment Option

Upper Cervical Chiropractic works to benefit the nervous system by ensuring that the brainstem can do its job properly. This is done through minor adjustments of the C1 and C2 vertebrae that are located at the base of the skull. Misalignment can put pressure on the brainstem and result in pain, headaches, fatigue, and other problems. If you are experiencing the symptoms of fibromyalgia, Dr. Rick Gregorio in Mount Pleasant, SC may be able to provide natural relief. An examination and thorough medical history can reveal if your symptoms are being caused by a C1 misalignment.

Natural Treatment for Migraines shown to be more Effective than Drugs

It is no secret that migraines are common for adults. Headaches are the #1 cause for doctor visits in America; 12 million Americans go to the doctor annually searching for relief from migraine headaches. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that Americans spend $72.5 billion each year on painkillers alone.

Treating migraines also causes major headaches fro healthcare providers in many fields. It is difficult to properly diagnose each individual patient as each case presents differently. Often brain scans are ordered that rarely yield a clear cause and expose patients to unnecessary radiation and cost an upwards of $1 billion yearly. From 1999-2010 the amount of diagnostic test ordered has doubled from 6.7% to 13.9%.

Many patients are seeking natural treatments for migraine headaches. A recent study performed at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston looked at 10,000 patients and what treatment methods were the most effective in results and cost. The results showed that natural treatment methods had a higher rate of success compared to over the counter and prescription treatments.1 The results showed the best things to do are:

  • Staying rested and getting a good nights sleep
  • Applying ice to the forehead during a migraine episode
  • Eating a well balanced healthy diet
  • Staying properly hydrated
  • Taking a hot shower
  • Relaxing

In Mount Pleasant South Carolina migraine specialist Dr. Rick DiGregorio is helping patients get relief from migraines naturally. As a specially trained Upper Cervical Chirorpactor, Dr. DiGregorio addresses the fundamental cause of migraines. Migraines are typically a symptom of something else happening in the body. Dr. DiGregorio helps patients get natural relief from migraines by analyzing the Atlas bone (C1 vertebra) and how it relates to the brain and nervous system.

The above list of natural techniques, work because of the calming effect on the nervous system when it is in distress. Large clinical studies have shown that headaches are often a result of a misaligned Atlas bone that disrupts the normal function of the body. When the Atlas is properly corrected to its natural position migraines are reduced in as little as 1 or 2 Upper Cervical Chiropractic adjustments.2

A Natural Approach to Migraines in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

The effects of migraines can be crippling for suffers. According to one migraine research organization, about 14 million migraines occur daily. In the US, this accounts for about six percent of men and 18 percent of women.1

If you experience migraines, then you know the symptoms well. Whether it is extreme pain, visual effects, hearing difficulties, or nausea, migraines can be debilitating for hours or perhaps days. Diagnosis and treatment of migraines can be difficult for most health practitioners. Consider the following options that are usually offered:

  • Most doctors recommend a food journal to determine and avoid triggers. Favorites such as chocolate, coffee, and red wine are considered the most common.
  • Recommended medications are usually over-the-counter NSAIDs. These are Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs that include ibuprofen as the active ingredient.
  • In severe situations, doctors may prescribe prescription drugs such as beta blockers or anti-seizure medications, all of which come with a host of side effects.

There was a recent report on CBS news about a natural method that is now becoming mainstream. Medical professionals have isolated the fact that migraines originate in the neck and spine. Misalignments create friction that affects the nerves. The result is a migraine. Doctors can provide relief for a few days using anesthetic injections to the neck2

These recent discoveries are not new science to Dr. Rick DiGregorio, who is a migraine specialist in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He uses Upper Cervical Chiropractic as a natural remedy for migraines. By adjusting the C1 and C2 vertebrae, Dr. DiGregorio can provide gentle relief and restore proper function to the nerves. A detailed examination allows him to determine the location of the misalignment and thus derive a unique treatment for each patient.

Even just one or two Upper Cervical Chiropractic adjustments can prove beneficial according to clinical trials.3 Properly aligned bones relieve the pressure on the nerves and can provide the relief that you are looking for in a natural way and frequently in a short amount of time.

When you can’t Balance your Multiple Sclerosis

Your MS and Your instability

If you are having difficulty keeping your balance, and you’ve recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, it’s because your nerve conduction is impaired. What that means is your muscles are not behaving they way they should because the Myelin Sheath that protects your nerves is damaged.

All of this may lead to sudden battles of weakness in one of your limbs or difficulty holding onto and carrying things. These problems may also manifest themselves as difficulty keeping one’s balance if the cerebellum is damaged, as that is the part of the brain that controls a person’s balance.

Multiple Sclerosis Research

According to research by Dr. Erin Elster, more than 90% of all people diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis experienced one or more significant head or neck trauma earlier in their life. These injuries to their upper cervical spine led to the twisting of the top two bones in their upper neck. That then led to a repositioning of the head, which then causes a sequence in the body called Righting Reflex.

What that means is that once those two bones in the upper neck vertebrae are twisted, the rest of the spine and the entire body repositions itself in order to keep the eyes and ears level with the horizon. This repositioning of the body causes the shoulders to tilt, the hips and to become imbalanced, and every part of one’s body from head to toe to adjust.

Of course, once all of this happens your body becomes more or less like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. You may not notice at first, but there will be a distribution of weight the places pressure on tissue and organs that are not meant to carry that weight. That will also effect the way you stand and walk.

Good News for MS Sufferers

Though, the good news is that just as easily as the misalignment of those two bones can cause your entire body to become imbalanced, realigning those two bones can reverse that process. This realigning of your upper cervical spine restores your body’s balancing position and will improvement the ability of people with Multiple Sclerosis and other chronic conditions to stand and walk.

Luckily, all it takes in order to reverse the damage in your upper neck vertebrae is to make an appointment with an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine your upper neck for any misalignments in the top two vertebrae in your spine. A misalignment of as little as ¼ of a millimeter can place pressure on your brainstem hindering your brain’s ability to communicate with your body and leading to all sorts of health problems. If they find any misalignments, they will make the necessary adjustments in order to realign those two bones, so your body can begin to heal itself.

My Accident Happened Months Ago But I Still Have Problems

Concussion, MTBI, Neck Injury, Brain Injury Accidents do happen in life like getting rear ended in a car, slip, trip or fall. We definitely want to try to avoid them as much as possible. But people often sustain more serious conditions during the accidents like concussions and do not even know it.

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury occurring after a direct blow to the head. However when people do not realize that they suffered something more severe like a concussion and start having various symptoms like headaches and dizziness weeks and even months after the initial injury, that is called post-concussion syndrome.

A loss of consciousness is not always required to diagnose a concussion. In reality, post-concussion syndrome is not associated with the how bad the car accident was, how hard you hit your head or how big the slip, trip or fall was.

Post-concussion syndrome symptoms generally occur within the first week or week and a half. and go away within three months, though they can persist for a year or more.

Migraines in Mount Pleasant

There is a medical understanding of how to treat post-concussion syndrome patient. Treatments are created to relieve of symptoms of headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory and noise and light sensitivity. However, they do not get to the cause.

Those medical treatment plans recommend physical and cognitive rest, return to normal activities, drugs and medication. What has not been adequately talked about is the role of upper cervical chiropractic care for the people suffering from post-concussion syndrome.

A traumatic injury that causes an unknown concussion that can bend the metal on an automobile is more than enough force to create misalignments in the spine. The upper cervical spine houses the brainstem where that misalignment can create pressure on the nervous system and create the symptoms associated with post-concussion. Putting the body back into balance will restore the integrity of the nervous system and frequently restore the patient’s life.
